Larry:
HI. IM LARRY BRUMBAUGH. WELCOME TO TREE TALK. WHEN YOU HAVE A YOUNG TREE, THE REASON YOU WANT TO START TRIMMING THEM WHILE THEY’RE YOUNG IS SO YOU CAN DEVELOP A TREE WITH A STRONG STRUCTURE AND A DESIREABLE FORM. TREES THAT ACTUALLY RECEIVE THE APPROPRIATE TRIMMING MEASURES WHILE THEY’RE YOUNG WILL REQUIRE LESS CORRECTIVE PRUNNING AS THEY MATURE. SO, IF YOU START TAKING CARE OF THE TREES WHEN THEY’RE SMALLER, AS THEY GET BIGGER, YOU DON’T HAVE NEAR THE WORK YOU HAVE TO DO TO TRY TO STRAIGHTEN IT OUT. I MEAN YOU COULD ACTUALLY TAKE A TREE WHEN IT’S YOUNG AND MAKE IT DEVELOP INTO A REAL NICE TREE THAT HAS STRONG LIMB STRUCTURE, IT’S NOT TOO FULL IN THE MIDDLE WHERE IT DOESN’T CATCH A LOT OF WIND. AND YOU KNOW AS IT’S GROWING, YOU DON’T WANT TO HAVE TOO MUCH TRIMMED OUT OF A YOUNG TREE, I MEAN YOU WANNA JUST TAKE OUT THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF LIMB. ALSO A LOT OF YOUR YOUNG TREES SOMETIMES THEY’LL TRY TO HAVE WHAT’S CALLED A CODOMINANT STEM. THERE’LL BE TWO STEMS AND ONE OF THOSE SHOULD BE SHOULD BE CUT OUT WHEN THEY’RE REALLY YOUNG BECA– USE AS THAT TREE MATURES YOU END UP WITH WHAT’S CALLED A TIGHT FORK, LIKE A V FORK, AND THAT’S A STRUCTURALLY WEAK TREE. SO, YOU DON’T WANT TO SPEND MONEY ON A YOUNG TREE AND HAVE IT GET BIG AND THEN IT ENDS UP SPLITTING APART IN A IN A STORM BECA– USE THERE SHOULD NOT BE TOO MANY LEADERS IN A STEMS IN A TREE. THAT’S IT FOR THIS WEEKS EDITION OF TREE TALK. UNTIL NEXT TIME, I’M LARRY BRUMBAUGH, THANKS FOR LISTENING.
