Larry:

HI. I’M LARRY BRUMBAUGH. WELCOME TO TREE TALK. THERE’S TWO TYPES, PIN OAK AND BRADFORD PEARS. THESE TREES SHOULD BE TRIMMED BEFORE APRIL. AND THE REASONS THESE TREES SHOULD BE TRIMMED IS BECA– USE PIN OAKS, IF YOU TRIM THEM FROM BETWEEN APRIL AND NOVEMBER, THERE’S A POSSIBILITY OF GETTING, WHAT’S CALLED, OAK WILT. AND THAT’S CA– USED BY MAKING A WOUND ON THE TREE AND THEN THERE’S AN AROMA THAT’S PUT OFF BY THE BY THE CUT AND THEN IT ATTRACTS BEETLES TO THE TREE AND THEN BEETLES COME TO THE TREE AND THEY START TO FEED ON THAT SAP AND THEY CUT OFF THE VASCULAR SYSTEM INTO THE TREE AND THEN THE TREE ENDS UP DYING. AND THEN THE BRADFORD PEARS, THE REASON YOU WOULDN’T WANT TO TRIM THEM AFTER APRIL WOULD BE BECA– USE ONCE THEY START TO, YOU KNOW, BUD OUT AND BLOOM, YOU DON’T WANT TO GET FIRE BLIGHT. IF YOU GET FIRE BLIGHT ON YOUR TREES AND THEY BECOME DISEASED, YOU HAVE TO CUT THE LIMBS OUT THAT ACTUALLY DIE BACK, THE LEAVES WILL CURL UP, TURN BLACK AND THEN YOU HAVE TO CUT THAT LIMB ALL THE WAY OUT OF THE TREE. IF IT GETS REALLY BAD AND IT AND IT SPREADS THROUGH THE WHOLE TREE THEN YOU WOULD LOSE THE WHOLE TREE. WE USUALLY TRIM, YOU KNOW, ALL THROUGH THE WINTER. THIS WINTER’S BEEN A LITTLE HECTIC BECA– USE SNOW HAS BEEN PRETTY DEEP BUT YEAH, WE CAN STILL GET OUT AND GET THEM TRIMMED BEFORE APRIL. IF YOU HAVE A TOPIC YOU’D LIKE US TO CONSIDER FOR A FUTURE EPISODE, EMAIL IT TO BTREESQUINCY@GMAIL.COM. WE’D LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU.
