Larry:
HI I’M LARRY BRUMBAUGH. WELCOME TO TREE TALK. IF THERE’S TOO LITTLE RAIN OR MOISTURE, WHAT HAPPENS IS THE LEAVES ON THE TREES USUALLY BECOME WILTED AND SCORCHED. THIS IS ONE OF THE MAJOR SIGNS THAT TREES ARE UNDER STRESS FROM NOT HAVING ENOUGH MOISTURE. ONE OF THE THINGS THAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS DURING THIS TIME IS TRANSPIRATION. IT’S A BOTANICAL TERM, WHEN A TREE GIVES OFF WATER VAPOR THROUGH THE TINY PORES AND ITS LEAVES, KNOWN AS THE STOMATA. THIS OCCURS NATURALLY, BUT WHEN THE ROOTS AREN’T ABLE TO PROVIDE ENOUGH MOISUTRE TO REPLENISH THIS LOSS, SCORCHING OCCURS MOST NOTICEABLY IN THE LEAVES. THEY WILL WILT AND CURL UP AND THAT’S ONE OF THE SIGNS OF NOT HAVING ENOUGH MOISTURE OR WATER. I GUESS IF WE HAD, YOU KNOW, A DROUGHT SEASON, FOR SURE, ONE OF THE THINGS THAT THEY SAY, YOU CAN TAKE A SIX INCH SCREWDRIVER AND ACTUALLY PUT IT DOWN AND PUSH IT TO THE GROUND. AND IF YOU CAN’T PUSH IT INTO THE GROUND, THERE’S NOT ENOUGH MOISTURE. BECA– USE BASICALLY MOST OF YOUR MOISTURE IS IN THE TOP SIX TO TWELVE INCHES, THAT’S WHERE ALL OF YOUR BEST ROOTS ARE AT. AND YOU CAN PUT YOUR SCREWDRIVER IN THE GROUND AND LIKE I SAID, YOU SHOULD GO DOWN SIX TO EIGHT INCHES PRETTY EASILY, IF THE GROUNDS, YOU KNOW, MOIST. THAT’S IT FOR THIS WEEK’S EDITION OF TREE TALK. UNTIL NEXT TIME, I’M LARRY BRUMBAUGH, THANKS FOR LISTENING.
