Larry:
HI I’M LARRY BRUMBAUGH. WELCOME TO TREE TALK. IN OUR FIELD AS A CERTIFIED ARBORIST THERE’S ACTUALLY FOUR PRUNING TECHNIQUES. THE FIRST ONE’S CALLED CLEANING. THAT’S WHERE YOU TAKE OUT DYING, DISEASED AND CROWDED LIMBS. THE SECOND ONE WOULD BE THINNING, WHICH WOULD BE TAKING OUT INNER LIMBS ON THE INSIDE TO LET AIR FLOW IN AND LIGHT PENETRATION. THE THIRD ONE WOULD BE RAISING THE TREE LIKE LOWER LIMBS YOU KNOW WHERE YOU’RE LIKE MOWING UNDER THE TREE AND THEY’RE HANGING DOWN LOW TO THE GROUND. RAISING AND THEN THE LAST ONE WOULD BE CALLED REDUCTION LIKE SAY YOUR TREE WAS EIGHTY FOOT TALL AND YOU WANTED TO TAKE TWENTY FOOT OUT OF IT; IT WOULD BE CALLED HEIGHT REDUCTION, NOT TOPPING. AND THE REASON IT’S CALLED HEIGHT REDUCTION IS BECA– USE YOU LATERAL TRIM WHERE YOU MAKE A CUT. THE LATERAL LIMB ON THE CUT IS GOING TO BE A THIRD OF THE SIZE OF THE CUT. WHEN PEOPLE TOP A TREE THEY DON’T LEAVE ANY LATERALS AT THE TOP OF THE TREE, THEY JUST CUT THE LIMB OFF AND IT’S A STUBBY AND THAT’S ALL YOU HAVE. ANOTHER GOOD THING TO DO IS TO HAVE YOUR TREES PRUNED WHEN THEY’RE YOUNGER. DON’T LET THEM GET TWENTY YEARS DOWN THE ROAD AND THEN START TRYING TO PRUNE ON THEM. YOU KNOW PRUNE THEM WHEN THEY’RE FIVE, SIX, SEVEN YEARS OLD, WHEN THEY’RE YOUNG AND YOU CAN TRIM THEM PROPERLY AND YOU KNOW TAKE OUT FUTURE WEAK LIMBS THAT YOU’RE NOT GOING TO HAVE TO DO WHEN THE TREE’S TWENTY YEARS OLD. THAT’S IT FOR THIS WEEKS EDITION OF TREE TALK. UNTIL NEXT TIME, I’M LARRY BRUMBAUGH. THANKS FOR LISTENING.
