IT’S TIME FOR TREE TALK… YOUR WEEKLY NINETY SECONDS OF TOTALLY TREES RADIO PRESENTED BY BRUMBAUGH TREE SERVICE LLC.

Larry:

WITH WINTER APPROACHING YOU MIGHT WANT TO CONSIDER PROTECTING YOUR TREES. MOST OF YOUR MATURE TREES THEY DON’T NEED ANY EXTRA PROTECTION BECAUSE THEY’VE ALREADY ESTABLISHED THEIR ROOT ZONE AND THEY HAVE ROOTS DEEP ENOUGH IN THE GROUND. BUT YOUR YOUNG TREES AND YOUR NEWLY PLANTED TREES AND SHRUBS NEED EXTRA TLC. AFTER THE GROUND FREEZES YOU COULD APPLY THREE TO FOUR INCHES OF MULCH AROUND THE BASE OF THE TREE BUT MAKE SURE YOU KEEP THE MULCH AWAY FROM THE TREE TRUNK BECAUSE YOU DON’T WANT TO PROMOTE TRUNK ROT OR MICE AND STUFF CHEWING ON THE BARK. ANOTHER REALLY BAD THING FOR OUR AREA IS THE BARK OF YOUNG TREES. THEY HAVE REALLY THIN BARK AND IN THE WINTERTIME THEY’RE SUSCEPTIBLE TO SUN SCALD. AND IT’S MAINLY ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE TREE. WHAT HAPPENS IS THAT THE SUN SHINES ON THE TREE TRUNK WARMS UP THE SAP AND THEN AT NIGHT THE SAP FREEZES AND THEN IT’S LIKE AN ICE CUBE IN A TRAY. IT POPS. AND THEN YOU HAVE A WOUND ON THE TREE, WHICH WON’T HEAL BACK UP. ONE WAY YOU CAN PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING IS YOU CAN WRAP THE TREE TRUNK WITHPAPER TREE WRAP AND THAT PREVENTS IT FROM GETTING TOO HOT.
