Larry:
HI. I’M LARRY BRUMBAUGH. WELCOME TO TREE TALK. A LOT OF PEOPLE BUILDING NEW HOMES, THEY’RE DOING NEW LANDSCAPING AREAS IN THEIR YARD. YOU DON’T REALLY THINK ABOUT THOSE SMALL TREES FOR THE FIRST FIVE YEARS. AND IN THE WINTER TIME THEY’RE EXPOSED TO THE SUN ON THE SOUTH AND THE SOUTHWEST SIDE, THEY GET WHAT’S CALLED SUN SCALD. SOME PEOPLE THINK SUN SCALD IS CA– USED IN THE SUMMER TIME WHEN IT’S HOT OUT. WELL THAT’S NOT TRUE; IT’S IN THE WINTER TIME. BUT WHAT HAPPENS IS, YOU HAVE A SUNNY WINTER DAY, THAT SUN ACTUALLY HEATS UP THE BARK AND IT’S UNDERNEATH THE CANOPY LAYER WHERE THE SAP WARMS UP. AND THEN AS THE TEMPERATURE GOES BELOW FREEZING AGAIN, THE SAP FREEZES. IT’S KIND OF SIMILAR TO IF YOU EVER PUT ICE CUBES INTO A CUP OF WATER HOW THEY POP, THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENS TO A TREE. WHEN THAT FREEZES, IT RUPTURES THE BARK. IT MAKES A WOUND ON THE TREE. WELL THAT WOUND IS GOING TO BE THERE PERMANATELY. SO WHAT YOU CAN DO TO PROTECT THAT IS, YOU CAN GET LIKE DRAIN PIPE, CUT IT, PUT IT AROUND THE TRUCK FROM THE BASE UP TO THE LIMBS, WE CAN GET SOME BURLAP THERE’S SOME OTHER STUFF YOU CAN WRAP IT WITH TREE WRAP. THAT PROTECTS THE DIRECT SUNLIGHT ONTO YOUR TRUCK. BUT YOU WANT TO REMEMBER THAT WHEN SPRINGTIME COMES, TAKE THAT OFF. THAT’S IT FOR THIS WEEK’S EDITION OF TREE TALK. UNTIL NEXT TIME, I’M LARRY BRUMBAUGH, THANK YOU FOR LISTENING.
