Larry:
HI. I’M LARRY BRUMABUGH. WELCOME TO TREE TALK. SINCE SPRING HAS SPRUNG I JUST THOUGHT THE HOMEOWNERS SHOULD, YOU KNOW MAYBE KNOW A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT MULCHING AROUND THEIR TREES. THERE’S ACTUALLY TWO TYPES OF MULCH. YOU HAVE THE ORGANIC MULCH, WHICH IS WOODCHIPS, PINE NEEDLES, LEAVES. YOU ALSO HAVE THE INORGANIC. THE ORGANIC IS BETTER FOR THE TREES BECA– USE THEY REPLENISH THE SOIL AS IT DECOMPOSE. THE, YOU KNOW, INORGANIC ONES DON’T ADD ANYTHING TO THE SOIL. THEY JUST KIND OF, THEY’RE JUST MORE FOR ASTHETICS ON THE GROUND. THEY DON’T REALLY DO ANYTHING FOR THE TREE. AND SOME OF THE PROBLEMS WITH IMPROPER MULCHING, IS PEOPLE PUT MULCH TO DEEP AROUND THEIR TREES, LIKE, ANYTHING MORE THAN FOUR INCHES IS TOO DEEP. YOU DON’T WANT TO PUT IT UP AROUND THE TREE TRUNK EITHER, YOU WANT TO KEEP IT BACK. WHEN YOU HAVE YOUNGER TREES YOU DON’T WANT TO PUT MULCH UP AROUND THE TRUNK OF THE TREE BECA– USE MICE AND STUFF THEY’LL WANT TO LIKE LIVE IN THERE AND THEY’LL AND THEY’LL CHEW ON THE BARK AND THEY’LL END UP RUINING YOUR TREE BECA– USE THEY’LL ACTUALLY DAMAGE THE BARK ON THE TREE AND ONCE THEY DAMAGE THAT BARK, IT WON’T HEAL UP. THE PROPER WAY TO MULCH WOULD BE, LIKE I SAID PREVIOUSLY, TWO TO FOUR INCHES, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR YOU KNOW TRUNK EXPOSED SO IT CAN GET AIR. THAT’S IT FOR THIS WEEKS EDITION OF TREE TALK. UNTIL NEXT TIME, I’M LARRY BRUMBAUGH. THANKS FOR LISTENING.
