Larry:

HI I’M LARRY BRUMBAUGH. WELCOME TO TREE TALK. YOU KNOW THE EMERALD ASH BORER IT IT’S A HUGE TOPIC, ITS BEEN YOU KNOW GOING ON SINCE 2002 AND IT IS HEADED OUR WAY. I JUST THOUGHT MAYBE THE PUBLIC MIGHT WANT TO BE YOU KNOW AWARE OF WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE. IT’S A ROCK METALLIC GREEN BEETLE, IT’S ABOUT A HALF INCH LONG, IT HAS A FLAT BACK, IT HAS A PURPLE ABDOMEN SEGMENTS BENEATH THE WIND COVERS. AND SOME OF THE SIGNS OF IT, IF IT IS IN YOUR TREE, WOULD BE CANOPY DIEBACK, THE ASH TREE STARTS TO DIE FROM THE TOP. YOU’LL ALSO GET A BUNCH OF EPICORMIC SHOOTS, WHICH WOULD BE DOWN BY LIKE THE BASE OF YOUR TREE, IT BASICALLY LOOKS LIKE A BUSH, LIKE YOU HAVE SPROUTS COMING OFF AT THE BOTTOM. YOU CAN HAVE SOME YOU KNOW BARK SPLITTING FROM IT. ANOTHER WAY THAT YOU KNOW PEOPLE COULD TRY TO LIMIT THE SPREAD OF THESE IS, DON’T MOVE YOUR FIREWOOD LIKE IF YOU’RE GOING CAMPING SOMEWHERE SAY YOU GET WOOD RIGHT HERE IN QUINCY, DON’T TAKE THE FIREWOOD A HUNDRED MILES AWAY WHEN YOU’RE ON YOUR CAMPING TRIP. BUY YOUR FIREWOOD THERE. AND THE SAME THING WITH BUYING YOUR FIREWOOD THERE AT THE CAMPGROUND, DON’T HAUL THAT WOOD BACK TO WHERE YOU LIVE. YOU COULD BE HELPING THE ASH BORER START A LOT QUICKER THAN WHAT IT SHOULD BE IN YOUR AREA. IF YOU HAVE A TOPIC YOU WOULD LIKE US TO CONSIDER FOR A FUTURE EPISODE, EMAIL IT TO B TREES QUINCY AT G MAIL DOT COM. WE’D LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU
