IT’S TIME FOR TREE TALK… YOUR WEEKLY NINETY SECONDS OF TOTALLY TREES RADIO PRESENTED BY BRUMBAUGH TREE SERVICE LLC.

Larry:

ONE OF THE PRIMARY REASONS FOR LEAVES TO CHANGE COLORS IS THE SHORTER DAYS, LESS SUNLIGHT. TWO OTHER FACTORS THAT COME INTO PLAY ON THE CHANGE OF COLOR IS THE MOISTURE AND TEMPERATURE. THEY PLAY A REALLY GOOD ROLE IN IT. IF YOU HAVE DROUGHT IN THE SUMMERTIME IT CAN DELAY THE CHANGE IN COLORS IN THE FALL AND THE TEMPERATURE CAN PLAY A PART IN THE COLORS OF THE LEAVES JUST BY CREATING CHLOROPHYLL IN THE GLUCOSE IN THE LEAVES. AND THERE’S THREE THINGS THAT ACTUALLY GIVE LEAVES THEIR COLOR. THE FIRST IS CHLOROPHYLL WHICH EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT’S THE GREEN PIGMENT THAT’S NEEDED FOR PHOTOSYNTHESIS SO THAT’S HOW THEY LIVE. CAROTENOIDS ARE ACTUALLY CAROTENES AND XANTHOPHYLL THAT’S THE ORANGE AND YELLOW COLORS. AND THE THIRD ONE IS ANTHOCYANIN THAT’S THE RED AND PURPLE AND THEY’RE THE RESULT OF THE GLUCOSE, WHICH IS THE SUGAR THAT’S TRAPPED IN THE LEAVES WHEN THE VEINS ARE CLOSED OFF FOR FALL. IT’S THE CHANGING SEASON. TREES ARE GOING DORMANT. THEY’RE GOING INTO WINTER. THEY’RE GETTING RID OF THEIR FOLLIAGE. AND THEY’RE STARTING TO STORE ENERGY FOR NEXT SPRING.
